Tests provided more insight into the cause of Bert’s respiratory failure, revealing spinal stenosis at C3-C6. Bert was placed on a ventilator and underwent surgery on his spine.

Her condition progressively worsened, and her respiratory status failed to improve. The hospital called Mary’s family to make a difficult decision on what would happen next.
